Family Law

In todays world there is no such thing as an ‘average’ family or ‘normal’ relationship. You may be married, in a civil partnership, living together, or separated. Children, step-children or adopted children are perhaps living with you or living with others. Grandparents or other family members could also be involved.

Whatever your situation, relationships can become problematical or break down and that’s when turning to a family solicitor can really help you to resolve difficulties quickly.

Whenever there are issues within relationships, it can be an extremely stressful and emotional time but we aim to help make things easier. We’ll work hard to get to know you and understand your own unique situation so that we can help you resolve whatever issues you are facing, allowing you to start planning for a happier future.

Our Family Law solicitors have in-depth knowledge of all aspects of family law and provide sympathetic legal advice to ensure that the practical implications of any relationship break-up are dealt with properly.

We can advise on financial and property matters but we never lose sight of the fact that although practical issues need to be resolved, feelings and emotions are equally important. We’ll explain everything in a way that’s clear and easy to understand. We also offer a free, initial, over-the-phone advice and will explain the costs and timescales involved up front so you always know what to expect.

Where children are involved, we know that your priority will be to ensure their welfare and we’ll provide complete support to help you do this. If situations arise where children may be at risk, we’ll work quickly to protect them. Our family law solicitors are experts in dealing with a wide range of disputes involving children. These include disagreements about who the children should live with and arrangements for other family members to see them, disputes over who the father is, or disagreements about who should be responsible for making important decisions in the children’s lives.

One way of resolving relationship difficulties is through mediation. Mediation is a recognised process where the people involved in a dispute can come together with a trained mediator who can help you reach an agreement. Paul Kidd provides an expert mediation service that can often help avoid a more lengthy or complex and costly legal case - see Mediation for details.

If you’re looking for confidential and friendly family law advice, contact us and speak to an experienced family law solicitor today.

Crime & Motoring

We cover all aspects of criminal law from motoring offences to more serious and complex criminal offences.

If you have been accused of committing a crime or motoring offence, you need to know what is happening, and how best to defend yourself.

From public order offences or theft allegations to serious crimes including assault, sexual offences, drug offences or murder, from minor Road Traffic violations to motoring incidents resulting in death or serious injury you need a defence solicitor who is professional and experienced in your particular situation.

If you are detained at the Police Station you should always request the police to contact us before you are interviewed so that you get the best possible advice. We can represent you FREE OF CHARGE at the police station 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A case can be won or lost by what is said at the Police Station. Many of the cases we are involved in at the Police Station result in the case ending there because we always give the best possible advice.

If you have to go to Court contact our office as soon as possible so that we can properly prepare your case.

We can represent you at the Magistrates’ Court or Crown Court. Our expert solicitors successfully handle a wide range of Criminal and Motoring cases providing you with a professionally prepared and highly skilled defence.

Our Service is aimed at providing the best possible advice and representation for you at both the police station and in court.

Property Matters

We understand that one of the most important things in anyone’s life is their home. And whether you own a property or rent, we know that your home means much more to you than just bricks and mortar.

Whether you’re buying, selling, investing, letting, or simply searching for your dream home, there will be times when you need a property law expert to help everything run smoothly. And should you encounter problems with your property, having a knowledgeable property solicitor on your side is invaluable. We provide a wide range of services to help safeguard your home or property investments. From tenancy agreements to advice on buying property at auction, we’re here to provide guidance and support whatever your circumstances may be.

With no hidden costs and a same day response promise, our friendly solicitors make property law straightforward and hassle free. We’ll explain all the processes clearly and answer any questions you may have. If you’re facing a housing or property issue, contact us.

When you have decided to sell or buy a property, the last thing you need is a lot of complicated legal jargon to confuse you. Our residential property solicitors will keep you advised about developments in your transaction every step of the way, explaining the legalities to you in a plain and understandable manner.

It is important when moving house that you appoint a firm who have a thorough knowledge of the conveyancing process. We have many years experience, and will fully advise you of any pitfalls which may arise during your transaction to ensure that you do not encounter any problems on completion.

We can advise you on:
  • Transfers of Equity
  • Re-Mortgages
  • Deeds of Gift
  • Part-Exchanges
  • Sales and Purchases Including Right to Buy and Compulsory Purchase
  • Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreements
  • Equity Release

If you have a problem with a neighbour regarding any aspect of your property, we can advise and assist you.

We offer a friendly, professional service, and we can guarantee that one person will deal with your transaction from your initial instructions to completion of your purchase rather than you being passed along a so called ‘conveyancing conveyor belt’.

Wills & Probate

Why should you make a Will?

Many people think that making a Last Will and Testament is something you do only when you are old, and other people don’t ever consider writing a Will. However, everyone with property or any assets should make a Will to protect their assets and their loved ones.

There are many reasons why we should all make a Will, below are a few examples:

  • The person that you appoint as your Executor can take decisions about your Estate immediately after your death. This will make everything much simpler and quicker for your loved ones to sort out at a very difficult time.
  • If you have children who are under the age of 16 years then through your Will you are able to nominate Guardians and make financial provision for your children. In the event of the death of both parents, arrangements will have been made by you for their future welfare.
  • If a relative or friend is dependant upon you in some way, you can make the right provisions in your Will to bequeath an appropriate part of your Estate to your dependant.
  • You may be able to save your family paying unnecessary Inheritance Tax at the time of your death by making appropriate provisions in your Will.

A properly drawn up Will gives you real peace of mind. You can make provisions for your partner and family, and know that your wishes will be carried out.

If you do not make a Will then your estate will be distributed according to the rules of intesacy. In some circumstances this can cause a great deal of distress for those who are left behind, and it could also cause hardship. The biggest problem is, of course, that those you might wish to benefit might receive nothing, and those you might not wish to benefit might do so!

Why use a Solicitor to write your Will?

A Will drawn up by a Solicitor addresses the matters referred to above and will deal with your own individual requirements.

Sometimes ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) Wills create more problems than they solve. It is essential that your Will is properly prepared by a solicitor to avoid any confusion or disputes when you die. We can advise you on Inheritance Tax implications and on the options that are available to you as to how you can leave your assets. Please do remember that any discussion you have with a Solicitor is confidential.

So whether you’d like to create a will or would just like to find out more about our will writing service, call us today on 01706 644118 to have a chat with one of our specialist solicitors.
